Review: Robert Plant and The Band of Joy at Ravinia Pavilion

This past Thursday night Robert Plant performed fresh out of Bonnaroo with The Band of Joy at Ravinia Pavilion. It was my first visit to the venue and I must say I was thoroughly impressed. The park is a vast landscape with speakers and lights conveniently placed throughout. Families and friends grab spots and construct some pretty elegant set-ups with food, drinks, blankets, and lawn chairs. Although the lawn experience is quite a delightful one, I would personally suggest upgrading to pavilion seats if you have the means. You can’t bring food or drink into the seating area, but there isn’t a bad seat in the house. The acoustics and visuals cannot be matched by the lawn and the crowd is very vibrant.

The band opened with Gallows Pole and closed the set with Ramble On, followed by two encores that had the crowd rushing up to the stage. There were also great covers throughout with Plant doing his best impersonations of Los Lobos, Low, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Uncle Tupelo, and Richard & Linda Thompson. The Band of Joy is made up of some incredibly talented musicians. Buddy Miller, Darrell Scott, and Patty Griffin are highly successful musicians/songwriters who wonderfully complement Robert Plant and add a bit of a country twang to the performance. The Band of Joy name was revived by Robert Plant for his recent tour, though originally it was the name of Plant’s first band which also included John Bonham. And as we all know, the two later went on to form Led Zeppelin with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones.

My Ravinia experience is surely one that I will not soon forget. With many more shows booked on this summer’s schedule, I strongly recommend catching at least one or two performances if not more. I’ve compiled a list of some of my personal favorites that are coming up soon, but be sure to check the Gold Coast Tickets website for a full list.
