And then there were Sixteen
The most exciting tournament in sports kicked off last Thursday and Friday when 68 of the best college basketball teams in the country took the court. This year’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament began with a bang. In fact, the games played on Thursday set a record for most games decided by a single point in any individual day of the tournament ever. The breath-taking day included the likes of Georgia State, UAB and UCLA all scoring major upsets sending brackets around the nation into flames. As the weekend progressed, however, the favorites were able to assert their dominance over the lower seeds. That is, of course, except for Villanova. The Wildcats were the first number one seed bounced from the tournament when they fell to NC State on Saturday. The other Wildcats left in the tournament have quite the buzz surrounding them. The Kentucky Wildcats are looking to be the first team since the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers to finish the season undefeated. While many think they are very likely to do so, anything can happen in March.
The Sweet 16 gets underway this Thursday when (7) Wichita State and (3) Notre Dame meet. In arguably the best game of the day, the Wichita State Shockers feature many members from their Final 4 team two years ago and are fresh off of a huge win over in-state rivals, Kansas. The Fighting Irish, led by super star Jerian Grant, survived in OT against what was a typical March performance from the Butler Bulldogs. The action continues on Thursday with (4) North Carolina – (1) Wisconsin, (5) West Virginia – (1) Kentucky and (6) Xavier – (2) Arizona.
Friday takes us to the other side of the bracket where, once again Michigan State’s Tom Izzo has the Spartans playing well at the right time. The seven seed Spartans take on the Oklahoma Sooners in what is sure to be an up and down game. Most believe it will be (1) Duke that comes out of their region but, they will have to get by (5) Utah first. The two other games on Friday are (11) UCLA – (2) Gonzaga and (5) NC State – (4) Louisville.
