Baseball is back on the North Side!

Baseball is back on the North Side!

The start of the 2015 Chicago Cubs season feels a tad different than the last couple of years. Amidst the discussion of the new scoreboard, and the ongoing construction project, there is a sense of optimism amongst most Cubs fans. So what makes this year different than the previous four? The addition of Joe Maddon should provide the organization with a stable leader they have lacked recently. Maddon, who came over from the Rays in the offseason, has years of experience, and even led Tampa to a World Series berth. Runs, however, are not scored from the dugout, and it is important to note that the Cubs have also improved on the field this offseason.

The addition of Jon Lester via free agency was undoubtedly one of the biggest moves of the offseason. The veteran lefty pitcher comes to Chicago with an incredible resume that includes a .43 ERA in the World Series. The Cubs front office will argue that they have another ace on the staff in Jake Arrieta, and it is hard to disagree that they are wrong. Arrieta, who had a career-best season last year, will have to show he can replicate his performance from last season to truly give the Cubs the 1-2 punch they need. Completely dominating the Cardinals in the second game of this season is a great start.

Familiar faces from last year make up the heart of the Cubs order. Jorge SolerAnthony Rizzo, and Starlin Castro will be looked upon to drive in runs for the team. Rizzo, at just age 25, is considered by many to be a clubhouse leader and will be counted on to produce similar numbers to his .32 home runs and .286 batting average from last year. For all Cubs fans, every day that passes is another day closer to the arrival of this man below:

Anytime the Chicago Cubs are brought up, it is impossible not to mention the potential impact of Kris Bryant. Bryant’s time will come soon enough, but look for the power hitting right-handed bat to bring even more energy to the north side. This year’s Chicago Cubs are not the Cubs of last year or the year before. Look for the team to remain competitive in the NL Central all year round!
