Monster Jam Returns to the Allstate Arena

The monster trucks are back again for the annual Monster Jam on February 13th & 14th at the Allstate Arena.  Each year, the United States Hot Rod Association tours the U.S. & Canada, while recently expanding into parts of Europe, Australia, Mexico, Costa Rica & The Philippines.  The show is a competition that features 2 different events, racing & freestyle.  The freestyle competition gives each driver 90 seconds plus an extra 30 second bonus to show off their skills on an open floor while driving over cars and doing tricks & stunts with their truck.  3 judges determine the winner of the freestyle contest by rating each driver with a score of 1-10.  The racing portion is a side-by-side traditional heads-up tournament race where the first truck to cross the finish line moves on to the next round until it is eliminated or wins the trophy by winning the Championship race.  If a driver wins both contests, they win the Double Down trophy, the 2nd most prestigious award next to winning the Monster Jam World Finals in Las Vegas.

Some of the smaller shows feature a wheelie competition and/or a donut contest.  Drivers in the donut contest try to spin their truck until one of three things happens, the driver gets too dizzy to continue, their truck can’t go any more, or they feel that they’ve accumulated enough points to win.  The goal of the wheelie competition is to hit a ramp & get big air while remaining perpendicular to the ground.
