WWE Payback May 1
On May 1, the Allstate Arena in Rosemont hosts Payback, the annual pay-per-view wrestling event that features pre-existing story lines & conflicts that play out during the WWE’s TV programs Raw and Smackdown. The wrestlers are characterized into heroes & villains based on a series of events that gradually build tension leading up to the culmination match at Payback. WrestleMania 32 took place on April 3, when Roman Reigns beat Triple H & won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. The following night on Raw, an open challenge to win the title belt was issued by Reigns, and Chris Jericho, AJ Styles, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn stepped up to accept the challenge, which set up a Fatal four-way #1 contender match to determine who will face Reigns in the championship match at Payback. Before the four-way match, Sami Zayn was attacked by Kevin Owens which forced Zayn out of the match & was replaced by Cesaro. AJ Styles won the four-way match so he will face Reigns at Payback. A week later, Shane McMahon gave Zayn an opportunity to participate in the championship match between Roman Reigns & AJ Styles if he could beat Styles that night in an impromptu matchup, but Styles was victorious.
Zack Ryder was crowned with his first Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 32 by winning a 7-man ladder match. But the following night on Raw, Ryder lost the belt to The Miz after Maryse (wife of The Miz) distracted him. Ryder tried to recapture the Intercontinental belt on the same week’s edition of Smackdown but was unsuccessful. On the next week’s episode of Raw, Cesaro beat out Kevin Owens & became the #1 contender for the championship & earned a title match at Payback against The Miz.
Shane McMahon initiated a Tag Team Tournament on April 11 on Raw where the final 2 teams will face off against each other at Payback. The contendership match at Payback will feature the duo of Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady against The Vaudevillains. The victorious duo will get a shot for the Tag Team Championship against The New Day on a future date that’s yet to be determined.
Another big matchup on the card for Payback will feature challenger Natalya versus Charlotte for the WWE Women’s Championship. On the April 11 episode of Raw, Natalya made champion Charlotte tap out which resulted in a disqualification, and again a week later. As an added bonus, Natalya will have her uncle, Hall of Famer Bret Hart in her corner to even the playing field. Charlotte will have her notorious father, wrestling legend Ric Flair in her corner who is known for his distracting antics to help Charlotte win matches.
The match card for this year’s Payback is stacked so you can imagine the drama that this all-star cast will bring. Don’t miss out on the action on May 1 at the Allstate Arena, great seats are available for purchase by clicking here.
